INFORMATION FOR THE STATE PRIMARY ELECTION – SEPTEMBER 1, 2020
Due to the changes to State Election Laws Chapter 115 of the Acts of 2020, voters will have more options when voting in the September 1, 2020 State Primary and the November 3, 2020 State Final/Presidential Election
VOTING IN-PERSON ON ELECTION DAY – Due to COVID 19 it was necessary to change some polling locations Voting Hours: 7 AM to 8 PM

Deadline to Register to Vote for the September 1st State Primary is Saturday, August 22, 2020. In-person registration will be offered this day at City Hall, 93 Washington Street, Elections Office, Room #5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. to register to vote, change your party enrollment or your Salem address. You may also register or make changes by going to: https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/
VOTE BY MAIL – Applications were mailed by the Secretary of the Commonwealth to every registered voter on or before July 1st. If registered after this date, an application was mailed to you by the City Clerk’s office with your acknowledgement letter.
Applications must be received by the City Clerk’s Office no later than 5:00 P.M., on August 26, 2020 to be mailed a ballot for the State Primary.
Vote-By-Mail Ballots must be received by the City Clerk’s Office no later than 8 PM on September 1st.
You may return your ballots by the following options:
- Use the prepaid Envelope to mail your ballot to the City Clerk’s Office
- Use any of our New Official Ballot Drop Boxes located at the following Fire Stations: When using the drop box you must place your sealed inner envelope in the white return envelope.
- Fire Station Central Headquarters, 48 Lafayette Street (installation date 8/17)
Fire Station #5, 64 Loring Avenue (installation date 8/17)-
Fire Station #4, 415 Essex Street (installation date approx. 8/24) -
Fire Station #2, 142 North Street (installation date approx. 8/24)
- Use the Drop Box outside of City Hall, 93 Washington Street (marked “payment drop”) When using the drop box you must place your sealed inner envelope in the white return envelope.
- You or a relative may hand carry your ballot back to the City Clerk’s Election Office, 93 Washington St., Room #5. When returning your ballot by hand, place your sealed inner envelope in the white return envelope.
EARLY VOTING – Will be held at the City Hall Annex, 98 Washington Street, 1st floor (the annex is located directly across the street from City Hall). Social Distancing Guidelines must be followed.

Guidelines for Early Voting In-Person or on Election Day
• Wear a Facial Covering – Extra Masks will be available if you forget yours.
• Maintain Social Distancing – Keep 6’ away from anyone not from your household, unless you are bringing a person of your choosing to assist you. Please follow all signage pertaining to Social Distancing.
• Bring a Pen – You may bring your own pen to cast your ballot. BLUE OR BLACK INK ONLY – Sharpie or Paper Mate Flair recommended (machines will not read red, highlighters, crayons and may cause issues with the tabulator). Marking Pens will still be provided and sanitized throughout the day
• Keep your ballot dry and free from hand sanitizers – Do not use hand sanitizer while handling your ballot and be sure your voting booth is dry as it may cause issues with casting your ballot. Hand Sanitizer will be provided at the check-out table.
• Bring a Clip Board or Book to mark your ballot on (if you don’t want to use a Voting Booth). Voting Booths will be cleaned throughout the day.
• Bring an ID – in some cases voters will be required to show an ID. It does not have to be a photo ID, BUT it must contain your name and address as registered. Acceptable forms of ID include utility bill, paycheck stub, driver’s license, etc.)
Once you are done voting, you must leave the polling location immediately.
