A Joint Public Hearing of the City Council and Planning Board will continue the consideration of proposed changes to our zoning laws regarding Accessory Living Areas this Thursday at 7 p.m. in City Council Chambers.
This change holds the potential for huge change to neighborhoods: It would no longer limit occupancy to family or caregivers; it would no longer require the home be owner-occupied (after two years); it would allow new construction — even in violation of underlying zoning (via Special Permit).
So, while this change could offer some positives with regard to increased housing and affordability, there are many potential negatives which must be avoided.
